Oceanographers study the physics, biology, chemistry and geology of the marine environment and how they interact with and influence the planet, including humankind. Ocean scientists use a variety of approaches, including satellite remote sensing, computer modeling, research ships, cabled observatories, and state-of-the-art instrumentation.
UMCES has an integrated group of scientists specializing in the study of ocean currents, chemistry, sedimentology, biogeochemistry, and ecology from plankton to marine mammals. Our research is done in diverse ocean environments—from the tropics to the polar caps. Our research areas range from food web ecology and harmful algal blooms, to ecosystem-scale studies using an array of techniques including field and ship-based observation, automated sampling, remotes sensors, and modeling.
