The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, the premier research and educational institution working to understand and manage our world’s natural resources, welcomes Charles O. Monk II as Chair of its Board of Visitors. Monk is managing partner of the Baltimore office of the national law firm Saul Ewing. An avid sailor, Monk is devoted to improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay and ensuring that Maryland’s environment is preserved for decades to come.
"Charlie knows UMCES well and he has an in-depth understanding of the University System of Maryland and the state's political landscape,” said Don Boesch, president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. “He is a fantastic leader, and he will be an important advisor for UMCES.”
A managing partner at Saul Ewing, Monk handles complex, high-stakes litigation primarily for companies facing crises or involved in transactions that will reshape their business. For more than 40 years, both private and public sector organizations have called upon him for guidance on critical legal, policy and regulatory matters.
He has served on the UMCES Board of Visitors for the past six years and succeeds Ron Kreitner, Executive Director of Westside Renaissance, Inc., who has served since 2009.
