Join IMET in honoring Black History Month with a powerful celebration in partnership with the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Experience an inspiring film screening and panel discussion spotlighting Maryland’s Black Watermen and their vital contributions to labor history. This special event will also pay tribute to the legacy of Vincent Leggett, founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation, whose work preserved and uplifted the stories of Black maritime heritage.
SCREENING: Water’s Edge: Black Watermen of the Chesapeake reveals the unique relationship and untold stories between African Americans and the Chesapeake Bay. The film chronicles unsung Marylanders who revolutionized an industry, dreamed beyond their circumstance and still keep this tradition alive today. George H. Brown, an ambitious steamboat captain, revolutionized recreation for Black Marylanders in the early 20th century. See innovators like the Turner Family of Bellevue and present-day captains who have survived by shifting their businesses from commercial fishing to chartering fishing parties.
