The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) announces the appointment of Essala Lowe as Vice President for Administration and Finance. She joins the leadership team at Maryland’s premiere environmental research university, headquartered in Cambridge, MD, as the chief financial and operating officer.
Lowe brings more than 20 years of research administration, regulatory compliance, and operations management experience for premier academic institutions, non-profit research organizations, and world-class laboratories. As a member of the UMCES executive leadership team, she is responsible for leading administrative and operational activities across the institution and plays a critical role in delivering effective and efficient research support, research facilities operations, and fiscal management and reporting.

Lowe comes to UMCES from the Brookhaven National Laboratory where she was Director, Operations for the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Previously, she served in senior operational leadership roles at American Type Culture Collection, George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus. She has also worked as a consultant and facilitator in the areas of research regulatory compliance, research operations and laboratory infrastructure design, and strategic planning for private research organizations and academic/nonprofit institutions.
She began her career in research administration and operations at The Rockefeller University and is an active member of several professional associations for research compliance and institutional operations/management. She holds an MPA, specializing in nonprofit leadership from Norwich University.
