Topic: Dynamic Ocean Management: Using Technology to Capture the Complexities of Spatial Ecology for Marine Conservation and Management
Abstract: Fish move; the ocean moves; and yet many of our marine conservation strategies and regulatory efforts are static in time and space. Often we are limited simply in our ability to understand the occurrence and distribution of species of concern because marine species are notoriously hard to observe across large areas and for extended periods of time. Leveraging advances in tagging technology and ocean remote sensing, we can better incorporate dynamic species distribution models into our management and regulatory efforts. My research focuses on capturing the occurrence and distributions of species of concern to support Dynamic Ocean Management efforts from the coastal Mid-Atlantic, to the Eastern Tropical Pacific. My goal is to create tools that allow managers and conservationists to better understand the overlapping conflicts between human activities and the marine species that occupy the ocean.
