A Letter from the Horn Point Laboratory Director
Dear Friends,
During this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty, students, and staff of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Horn Point Laboratory continue our important work to better understand, restore, and sustain our environment—but we are doing so in a different way. We are working at home analyzing data from our research projects, comparing our scientific results with those that have been published, and we are writing papers that we will submit to scientific journals which will be read by faculty and students throughout the world. Instead of standing in front of students in a classroom, our faculty are teaching their courses over the internet where students not only see their teacher but also the other students and can engage in class discussions. We have had virtual “Town Hall” meetings where we exchange ideas on how we can improve and expand our research and education programs in this virtual work environment.
The Horn Point Laboratory is also supporting our local communities in this difficult time. Our staff is volunteering for local food banks. Our Laboratory has donated bleach, plastic gloves, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and paper towels to Dorchester County Emergency Services. If you know of other ways we can help our local communities, please let me know.
Our highest priority is the safety of our families and friends. Thus, I wish you and your family well. Be safe and enjoy your time together. In the next few weeks, we will be developing a number of virtual outreach programs on different environmental topics where you can learn about some of our exciting work and ask questions.
