Visiting Scholar Seminar Series: John Wenzel, Carnegie Museum of Natural History

February 27, 2020 3:30pm to 4:30pm iCal Google Calendar

John Wenzel, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, will present "Large-scale forest ecology at Powdermill Nature Reserve through classical approaches and emerging technologies," as part of the Appalachian Laboratory's Visiting Scholar Seminar Series.

Abstract:

Long-term research at a landscape level permits us to address several important topics in forest ecosystems. Does plant functional diversity relate to above ground biomass? How does current plant community variation relate to past land use? What are the effects of major disturbances such as logging or browsing by high densities of white tailed deer? This talk will report results from classical survey approaches, as well as offer a view of new methods that permit accurate and rapid assessment of forest stands by drone technology.
