UMCES graduates next generation of environmental leaders

Twelve graduate students received joint degrees from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) at a virtual ceremony on May 27, 2021. The Commencement 2021 ceremony featured a keynote address from Senator Cardin, distinguished speakers, and the recognition of outstanding faculty, staff and students.

Christina Goethel awarded UMCES' Student Service Award

The UMCES Student Service Award honors a graduate student who has provided outstanding service to their laboratory unit, UMCES, the University System of Maryland, their community, government agencies, and/or professional societies. The inaugural UMCES Student Service Award is presented to Ms. Christina Goethel.

Professor Rose Jagus receives President’s Award for Excellence in the Application of Science

President Peter Goodwin has awarded the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES)’s annual President’s Award for Excellence in Application of Science to Rosemary Jagus, a professor in molecular genetics at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, for her contributions to increasing the diversity of scientists working in the marine sciences over the past two decades.

Anne Gustafson honored with President’s Award for Outstanding Research Support

Jeremy Testa selected by UMCES graduate students as Outstanding Faculty Mentor

Associate Professor Jeremy Testa, a marine ecologist studying nutrient cycling in coastal systems at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, has been selected by the graduate student body to receive the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award for his dedication to both science and his students.
