"My research is working to understand how we can identify when male Jonah crabs, an understudied species of crab, become sexually mature. I am looking at hormone levels and sperm content and relating it to the crab’s size to help policy makers establish size limits for fishermen who collect the crabs."

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Appalachian Laboratory asks the community to nominate an outstanding individual, organization, or project for its 2020 Richard A. Johnson Environmental Education Award. Recipients of the Johnson Award receive a monetary award and a plaque commemorating their achievements during a special event in April. Nominees are limited to those who have made a noteworthy impact on environmental education in Allegany and Garrett Counties.

"I study marsh biogeochemistry, specifically what happens to dissolved organic matter (DOM)—microscopic organic compounds—once it gets into marsh soils. Ultimately my goal is to create a more accurate model to predict how compounds in the sediment move and change throughout the system. This research has major implications for sea-level rise and salt intrusion into the marshes."
