Scientists from Chesapeake Biological Laboratory are partnering with local restaurants on Solomons Island to “make the switch” from common, single-use petroleum-based plastics, such as straws and take-out containers, to compostable and biodegradable products in an effort to keep harmful plastics out of waterways.

Growing noise in the ocean can cause dolphins to change their calls

Researchers from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science laid underwater microphones on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to find out more about the ambient noise levels in the area off the coast of Maryland. They found that dolphins are simplifying their calls to be heard over noise from recreational boats and other vessels in nearby shipping lanes.

Brian Duke honored by Board of Regents for impact on Chesapeake Biological Laboratory campus

C. Brian Duke, Facilities Manager at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, has been awarded the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Staff Award for Effectiveness and Efficiency. This is the first time that an UMCES staff member has received this prestigious system-wide award.
