Proteus is an animated documentary exploring the nineteenth century’s engagement with the undersea world through science, technology, painting, poetry and myth. The central figure of the film is biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel, who found in the depths of the sea an ecstatic and visionary fusion of science and art.
The film will be followed by a discussion led by Horn Point Laboratory Director Professor Mike Sieracki and Professor Emeritus Jim McKusick, author of the book "Green Writing: Romanticism and Ecology" about the English Romantic poets. He is currently President of the Coleridge-Wordsworth Society. Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" features in the film.
